Adam Richman is on the mend following his second mystery surgery, having shared a heartfelt update that had fans breathing a sigh of relief.
The beloved “Man v. Food” host, 51, took to Instagram on May 23 to let his followers know he made it through the procedure safely. His post-surgery message combined gratitude with his characteristic humor, even managing to slip in a comment about basketball during his recovery update.
“I’m home, and grateful to have made it through,” Richman wrote in his update. “Feeling quite rough, but that’s to be expected. Looking to use this summer to rebuild mentally and physically and come out with some new bangers for you this fall.”
True to form, the television personality couldn’t resist adding some sports commentary to his health update, writing: “Also Jalen Brunson should NOT have tried that long range three,” referring to the New York Knicks guard’s playoff performance.
The recovery update came after Richman had shared a deeply emotional message with fans before going into surgery earlier that Friday.
“Hello beautiful people. Don’t want to scare anyone like last time, so just want to be ultra clear-Today is surgery number two,” he had written before the procedure. “And because nobody knows the future, I just wanted to once again tell all those who have been so kind and supportive of me & the shows I make and have made, I am forever grateful & love you all so much.”
His pre-surgery message included a touching reference to his beloved soccer team. “Blessed to live the life I have & yes, blessed to live long enough to see my beloved @spursofficial lift a European Trophy,” he shared.
Previous Health Scare Explanation
Richman’s latest surgery follows an earlier health concern that prompted him to address worried fans after posting what many interpreted as an alarming message. In April, he had shared a cryptic post that sparked widespread concern among his followers, leading him to provide clarification about his medical situation.
“I wasn’t going to say anything because it’s kind of a personal nature,” he explained in a follow-up video. “So I have to have a couple of surgeries. Thankfully, it’s just to fix some injuries I’ve had. It’s nothing, God forbid, related to a much more serious medical condition. But they’re serious surgeries to fix these injuries.”
The television host’s openness about his fears surrounding medical procedures stems from a deeply personal family experience. He revealed that his father underwent what was described as routine surgery at age 52 and “never came out,” which has left Richman with lasting anxiety about hospitals and surgical procedures.
“These injuries are maybe a little bit of a result of me feeling my own age,” he added. “I’m scared. I’m super scared out of my mind, and a bit sad. I know nowadays, everyone’s trying to be a sigma — no one wants to admit any kind of fear, but I’m scared.”
Past Health Challenges and Recovery
Richman’s recent surgeries are unrelated to a previous life-threatening health scare he experienced in 2018. The former Food Network star nearly died from an MRSA infection that began with what appeared to be a simple pimple on his mustache follicle during a culinary event in Zurich.
“One of my mustache follicles just looked like a pimple and it was just not healing well,” Richman recounted on the “Celebrity Catch Up: Life After That Thing I Did” podcast. “I’d gone to a doctor, and then eventually my lip inflated like a banana – it was grotesque. I remember I went to tear a piece of medical tape and I couldn’t get to my teeth.”
Medical professionals explained that the infection occurred in what they call the “danger triangle” of the face, an area where surface infections can potentially spread to the brain. The severity of the situation required quarantine, surgery, and intensive antibiotic treatment.
“I found out from maxillofacial surgeons that the area from the inside of your eyes to the outer corner of your lips, they call it the ‘danger triangle’ because there’s multiple opportunities for a surface infection to go intracranial,” he explained.
That health crisis greatly impacted Richman’s perspective on life. “Gratitude is the attitude because fate, God, disease, the higher power of your choice, can take it away just like that. Every day above ground is a gift,” he shared.
Richman gained fame hosting “Man v. Food” for four years, taking on extreme eating challenges before leaving the show in 2012 due to health concerns. He subsequently lost 70 pounds and adopted a healthier lifestyle, motivated by a moment when he saw his reflection and realized his body had become “the size of a Smart car.”
