Season 9 “Dancing With the Stars” alum Macy Gray starred on the UK’s version of “The Masked Singer.” However, after she was eliminated, she stormed off the stage.
“Lol,” host Joel Dommett captioned an Instagram video showing the moment Gray, who played Toad in the Hole, walked away. The panel was left stunned by Gray’s actions.
In an interview with BBC Radio 2, Dommett discussed the singer’s abrupt exit. Ultimately, Dommett thought it was hilarious.
“In my professional career — I love Macy, she is incredible, great voice —- but I have never witnessed anything more funny than a 6ft toad storming off,” he said. “It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” he said, according to the Daily Mail.
Gray first appeared on the Australian version of the show in 2021. Two years later, she was on season 10 of the U.S. version, finishing in fourth place. She was the third person eliminated on the UK version of the show, which airs on ITV.
DWTS Fans Reacted to Macy Gray’s ‘Masked Singer’ Elimination on Reddit
Following Gray’s elimination, some fans took to Reddit to react.
“It was AWKWARD,” the OP said, kicking off a new thread. “Figured I’d share here as she’s a DWTS alum. She supposedly didn’t expect to be out of Masked Singer so early but her voice was recognised. Coincidentally her doing DWTS was a clue in one of her packages,” the OP explained.
“I don’t watch Masked Singer or DWTS, but I saw this clip on youtube. I’ve been a Macy Gray fan for a long time, she’s one of my favorite artists. I’ve seen her live several times and I’ve watched a good number of her interviews. I gotta say, this came off as performative. I think this was nothing more than a ratings stunt,” one person wrote.
“But like… I know part of the allure it to guess that voice, and she really does have an iconic voice that is super recognizable, but audience votes on favorite performances which then tells us who is eliminated, right? So… that should speak for itself,” someone else added.
Macy Gray Will Still Be Paid the Same Money
According to Dommett, Gray will still be paid the same amount of money regardless of when she was eliminated from the show.
“This is why The Masked Singer is so good, it doesn’t matter if you’re a good singer or if you’re not, the show doesn’t sit in either camp,” he said in his interview with BBC Radio 2.
“The case with Macy is she is a legend, she has a recognisable voice and she might as well go because we all know it is her, and they put the other person through because we still don’t know who they are,” he continued.
“If you go home early though it is a win-win situation because you get the same money and you don’t have to do anything else,” he added.
