Country icon Wynonna Judd says for her, touring is a great way to cope with grief.
Wynonna sat down with country singer Clint Black as a guest on his “Talking in Circles” program May 23.
The Country Music Hall of Famer told Black that that’s why she went on the planned “The Judds: The Final Tour” solo right after her mother and partner in the Judds committed suicide.
“Here’s the deal, y’all. We have to celebrate the past because it’s where we come from but not be defined by it,” she told Black.
“So I’m trying to go back and stop the car, read the map and see where I’m going because I’m making a record right now. But I’m also living in the past, I’m in the present, and singing in the future.”
Wynonna reiterated that the tour celebrated “just how far I’ve come.” “I got through it. I’m better, not bitter, for all the crap that’s happened to me. That’s the key.”
“I think you have to get to a place in your life where you realize you’re not a victim. And all this crap has happened to me with mom committing suicide last year I had a choice to make.”
“I could either let that define me or give me permission to show everybody and myself that I could do it even in spite of the hellish time period that I went through, that I could still sing. And so I went on tour because those fans bought the tickets and they were there for me.”
Wynonna Approaches Upcoming Tour With Same Hope
Now the legendary singer is hoping the fans show up once again as she hits the road for her Wynonna Judd: The Greatest Hits Tour.
The tour ramps up Saturday, June 7 when Wynonna plays the world’s largest country music festival, CMA Fest, in Nashville.
The singer says she chose touring rather than choosing to “stay home and complain.” “I’m going to go to work,” she says.
And she’s just as eager as her longtime fans to dive back into some of the Judds’ most iconic songs.
The red-headed legend rocked the ACM Awards May 8 with a performance of the Judds’ hit “Why Not Me.”
While Wynonna Judd has said there’s no place she’d rather be these days than on her Tennessee farm raising her 3-year-old granddaughter Kaliyah, she’s excited about her upcoming tour.
In a recent Instagram post, Wynonna put up some old pictures of her posing with fans in the 1980’s. In the caption, she writes, “Just came across a nostalgic bunch of photos from the 80’s shared within our fan club community. Now I can’t sleep! Too excited for ACM Awards this week, followed by CMA Fest next month, then the GREATEST HITS TOUR!!! Keep the momentum going, FANmily! 😘”
She’ll have 40 more tour stops before wrapping up on October 4 at Ocean City, Maryland’s Country Calling Festival. You can find tickets to any of her tour stops here.
