Tim McGraw Opens Up About What Has Him Considering Retirement

Tim McGraw has been climbing the country music charts and entertaining live concert audiences since the early 1990s. However, all good things must come to an end, and that may be the case for McGraw’s liIn a recent episode of the TL’s Roadhouse podcast with country star Tracy Lawrence, McGraw opened up about how dealing with health issues and physical injuries over the years have made him consider retiring. The singer has had multiple back surgeries, and even a torn rotator cuff to work through, and knee surgery led him to cancel shows in 2024.

Although he announced in early May 2025 that he was returning to performing, these situations have understandably given him pause. “There were times this year that I thought this might be it,” the singer admitted to Lawrence. “This might be time to hang it up.”

Unsurprisingly, dealing with these health issues has led McGraw to change his approach to live performances. As he explained to Lawrence, he makes a conscious effort to avoid actions that might re-aggravate old injuries. “I have to be very careful about what I do. What I do do is everything is intentional. I can’t move quickly, there’s no turning real quick to do something.”

Although there are definitely limitations to what the country crooner can do on stage now, he explained that, for now, he’s still motivated to put on an entertaining show for his fans. To continue safely performing, the singer takes more time to recover than he once did, and he uses several other techniques to maintain his physical health. “I have to do cold plunges, I have to do infrared saunas,” he said. “I have to do massages.”

The Singer is Proud of His Daughters Following in His Footsteps

Retirement may not be far off for McGraw, but his daughters are set to write the next chapter of the family’s country legacy. This year, his youngest daughter, Audrey McGraw, released her first-ever single, and Tim shared that it was difficult to not try to impart some fatherly wisdom during the process.

“She wrote everything, and the dad in me and the producer in me, when she played the music back for me – ‘it isn’t finished yet, you gotta tune your vocal, you gotta tune these guitars, you gotta add a few more layers,'” Tim shared, adding that Audrey has her own very clear vision for her music. Whatever the next few years may hold for Tim in terms of live performances, the musical future for the McGraw clan certainly looks bright.
