Sabrina Carpenter has officially made her mark on the country charts, and it’s all thanks to the Queen of Country! Carpenter’s remix of her hit “Please Please Please” that features Dolly Parton has made its debut on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart!
Carpenter Taps Parton for Deluxe Edition of Album
Originally a pop hit on Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet” album, the Grammy-winning singer recorded a remix of the song with Dolly Parton for the deluxe edition of the album. Thanks to Parton’s signature twang, the remix has more of a country vibe, sparking interest among country music lovers and offering Carpenter a foothold in a new genre.
According to “Billboard,” the remix opened at No. 17 on the survey. Billboard says the song drew 6.3 million official U.S. streams and sold 2,000 downloads in its first week, according to Luminate. The remix includes new instrumentation more in line with traditional country, as well as airplay-friendly edited lyrics that make it more attractive to country radio stations.
The new version of the song’s lyric change is at Parton’s request, with Sabrina Carpenter and Dolly Parton singing, “I beg you, don’t embarrass me, like the others,” instead of the original, “I beg you, don’t embarrass me” and then an expletive.
In a video posted on her Instagram account, Dolly teased Sabrina about some of her lyrics, saying “You and your dirty words! I can’t say them words for my kids.”
The original version of “Please Please Please” hit number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 last June. It was Carpenter’s first number one on that chart.
Number 17 Hit Is Second Top 20 for Dolly This Decade
While the remix of “Please Please Please” may be Carpenter’s first time charting on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs list, Parton has now reached the top 20 twice this decade, according to Billboard. That’s something that hasn’t happened for the icon since the 1990s. Last April, she hit No. 12 with “Tyrant,” with Beyoncé, from the singer’s Grammy-winning album “Cowboy Carter.” With that track, Parton made history by scoring a top 20 entry seven decades in a row, starting with her first in 1967, the No. 17-peaking “Something Fishy.”
According to Billboard, Parton now boasts 76 career top 20 Hot Country Songs hits, with eight in the ‘60s; 34 in the ‘70s; 27 in the ‘80s; three in the ‘90s; one each in the 2000s and 2010s; and now two in this decade.
Sabrina Carpenter & Dolly Parton’s Fun Music Video
In the video for “Please Please Please,” Sabrina Carpenter and Dolly Parton go on a “Thelma and Louise” style road trip in an old pickup truck, with a little surprise in the back.
The video seems to give a not-so-subtle wink at Carpenter’s ex, actor Barry Keoghan. The video’s plot unfolds as Dolly and Sabrina run from the law with a man tied up in the back of the pickup, alongside a shovel.
Keoghan was famously featured in the video for the original version of the song, which was shot when the pair were still dating.
In that video, the then-couple start a relationship after getting out of jail. But when Keoghan is arrested again, Carpenter takes matters into her own hands. She handcuffs him to a chair and tapes his mouth shut before planting a kiss on his lips and leaving him in an empty warehouse.
