Lainey Wilson Shares The Motherly Advice She Didn’t Take

Country music star Lainey Wilson has some strong opinions on what makes good and bad advice. In an interview with Bobby Bones ahead of the ACM Awards ceremony tonight, the singer explained that her mother, Michelle Wilson, wasn’t an ideal source of advice on one very important topic: her singing skills.

Bones asked Wilson if she had anyone close to her that could be counted on for honesty about her performances. The singer said she does have people in her life that fit that bill, but she is particular about who she takes pointers from. “I don’t want to take advice from people who aren’t where I want to be,” Wilson explained. Apparently, as the singer lightheartedly shared, her mother is one of those people when it comes to singing.

Wilson Says Her Mother Isn’t Musically Gifted, But Gives Great Feedback in Other Ways

Wilson has enviable musical chops, but she didn’t get ’em from her momma. As she recalled in the interview, her mother tried to give her singing tips, but she refused to take them because: “My momma can’t carry a tune in a bucket.” She shared that the advice used to frustrate her when she was younger.

However, the singer did give her mother credit for having great instincts about another aspect of her music. “But I will say, when it comes to, like, choosing songs, and picking songs, and the ones that I write, I can always trust my momma’s judgment.” She explained that she can always count on her mother’s honest feedback on her songs, for better or worse.

The Singer Greatly Values Her Relationship With Her Family

Wilson may not want to hear her mother’s thoughts on singing, but her family is clearly very close to her heart. In an interview with American Songwriter, she explained that her parents are a huge part of her life. “My family means a whole lot to me. I am who I am because of the people who raised me… I feel like I wouldn’t be me if I wasn’t raised by Ryan and Michelle Wilson.”

The singer took a step toward expanding her family in early 2025 by getting engaged to long-term boyfriend Devlin “Duck” Hodges.
