Morgan Wallen has officially landed his 17th No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart with “I’m the Problem.” Safe to say this has furthered his cementing chart-topping legacy, with more records expected to be earned. The single, released Jan. 31, also shares its name with his forthcoming fourth studio album, due May 16.
According to Billboard, the single is Wallen’s fastest to reach the top since his recent hit “I Had Some Help” with Post Malone. The momentum behind “I’m the Problem” highlights Wallen’s continued reign as a male dominant force in country radio.
Behind The Lyrics
“I’m the Problem” explores themes of emotional accountability and relational tension, balancing raw vulnerability with a dose of defiance. The lyrics paint a picture of a relationship in heavy turmoil, as Wallen sings:
“I guess I’m the problem / And you’re Miss Never do no wrong / If I’m so awful / Then why’d you stick around this long?”
It’s a moment of self-awareness, but not without calling out the other person’s role in the relationship as well. He continues:
“And if it’s the whiskey / Then why do you keep on pullin’ it off the shelf? / You hate that when you look at me, you halfway see yourself.”
The 31-year-old doesn’t shy away from sharing blame, but he also points to the mutual dysfunction driving the relationship. The result is a powerful and relatable message for listeners who’ve found themselves caught in a cycle of blame and regret.
A Marathon of Music Ahead
“I’m the Problem” will lead Wallen’s most ambitious project to date: a 37-track album packed with new material and A-list features. Some of these features include Tate McRae, Post Malone, ERNEST, Hardy and Eric Church. The singer has been teasing the release via social media, dropping clips and behind-the-scenes footage to build anticipation. TikTok users have been further enhancing the album craze by creating viral videos to snippets of songs, which has led to the rise of singles.
The upcoming album marks a continued evolution in Wallen’s sound, blending his country roots with Southern rock, pop, and introspective ballads.
Wallen’s journey began on “The Voice” back in 2014, and although he didn’t win, the show introduced him to the industry. His debut album, “If I Know Me,” dropped in 2018 and produced several hits, including “Whiskey Glasses.” He followed up with the massively successful double album “Dangerous” in 2021 and the 36-track “One Thing at a Time” in 2023—both of which broke records and topped charts.
Despite controversies, Wallen has remained a fixture in the country scene, with fans praising his emotional storytelling and down-to-earth but bold lyrics. His ability to connect, both musically and personally, has helped him weather public scrutiny and return to the spotlight.
