Dolly Parton Explains Why She Won’t Be a Judge on American Idol

Dolly Parton does it all- from singer and songwriter to movie star to entrepreneur- but there’s one thing you won’t see her doing.

And that’s being a judge on “American Idol” or “The Voice.”

Dolly told “E News” that she’s been asked many times to be a judge on both shows, but her answer will always be no. “I’ve been asked to do that a lot of times,” Dolly said. “It’s too hard for me. That’s why I don’t accept it, because I know how sincere everybody is. Even if they’re not that good, they believe they are. And I just can’t hurt people.”

Dolly May Not Be a Judge, But She Has Been a Mentor

Dolly doesn’t like to judge, but she does like to help!

The legendary singer has been a guest mentor on both “American Idol” and “The Voice.”

Dolly appeared on season seven of “American Idol,” when the top nine contestants- including winner David Cook– performed her songs.

She appeared on “The Voice” twice- in season nine in 2015 and again in season 11 in 2016.

ACMs Break With Tradition to Honor Dolly’s Husband Carl Dean

While Dolly Parton continues to soldier on with her many projects, the Academy of Country Music Awards May 8 stopped to honor the singer’s recent loss.

Even though Dolly did not attend the ceremony, the ACMs still broke with tradition in its “In Memoriam” segment that honors members of the country music community who have passed away during the past year.

But this year, Reba McEntire added a tribute to Dolly’s beloved husband Carl Dean.

Reba introduced the segment by performing an a cappella version of “Me and Bobby McGee,” which was written by Kris Kristofferson. Kris passed away at age 88 in September. Reba commented, “what a poet he was.”

After singing, Reba said, “Tonight, we remember Kris and all those in our extended country music family who’ve passed this past year. And that list includes my buddy Joe Bonsall from the Oak Ridge Boys, the wonderful singer-songwriter Melba Montgomery, the highly respected music publisher Ben Vaughn, and Dolly Parton’s husband and love of 60 years, Carl Dean. They all brought music to our lives, and live on forever in our hearts.”

The screens on stage displayed a picture of Dolly Parton with her arms around Carl Dean.

‘What Would Dolly Do?’ Now We Know!

It turns out there are a few other things Dolly just wouldn’t do.

Among the rapid fire questions from E News, the interviewer asks Dolly if she’d ever go to space like Katy Perry recently did aboard the Blue Origin New Shepherd-31 rocket.

Dolly didn’t have to think about her answer. “No, Dolly wouldn’t! I don’t really like to fly,” she said laughing.

And the same goes for self-driving cars. When asked if she’d ever be a passenger in a self-driving car, she said, “NO! Dolly wouldn’t!”

But her biggest no came when asked if she’d go out in public without hair and makeup. “No way! Dolly wouldn’t! wouldn’t! wouldn’t! wouldn’t!”

But one thing that Dolly WOULD do for sure– throw herself a party.

When the interviewer asked her, “Dolly would or Dolly wouldn’t throw a massive party for her 80th birthday?” “Oh, I would!” Dolly exclaimed. “Of course!” she went on, “I’d probably do it on television. I’d probably do some big special. I might surprise you, make some announcement. You think I’m gonna let a thing like that go by without making a big to-do about of it? I mean, how many people turn 80-years-old still doing all the things I’m doing? So I’m excited about it. I mean, I don’t like being 80, but since I am and I’m still doing great, I’m going to make the most of it.”
