After four years without a fresh Blake Shelton album, country music fans can finally rejoice. “For Recreational Use Only” officially hit the airwaves today, including the chart-topping first single, “Texas.” However, there are plenty of other great songs on the album as well, including an emotional new duet with Shelton’s wife, Gwen Stefani.
The track, called “Hangin’ On,” tells the story of two people who just can’t seem to move on from each other. The chorus is as catchy as it is bittersweet, painting a picture of a couple that still thinks of each other often despite not being together.
I hear you’re hangin’ on
The other the side of this town
Somehow that messes me up Wonder if that picture of us Is still hangin’ on
That paisley wall in your room
Or did you take it down?
Although the track is decidedly a break-up song, the real-life couple behind it is as happy as ever,
Shelton Tells Fans That “Hangin’ On” Isn’t a Reflection on His Relationship

Although some fans worried that “Hangin’ On” might mean a storm is brewing for Shelton and Stefani, the country star told Entertainment Tonight that the song doesn’t connect to their relationship. “Don’t worry, it’s not art imitating life,” he explained.
However, Shelton did share that he and his wife were both equally excited to perform the track together. When asked about Stefani’s first impressions of “Hangin’ On,” Shelton said: “We both were like, ‘Oh my god, we’re doing that song.’ It wasn’t even like a ‘let me think about it’ thing.” As the singer further explained, the hard-hitting chorus was a big deciding factor for the couple.
The Couple Will Hit a Relationship Milestone This Year

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton don’t just have a new duet out this year; they also have a very special anniversary coming up. As Shelton shared with People, he and his wife will celebrate ten years together this year. When asked to describe what life is like with Stefani, he explained that it’s still hard to believe they have been together for so long. “I feel like that might be the key to happiness, is that it feels just as exciting and new and happy,” he said.
