‘Star Trek,’ Rami Malek, Zarna Garg: What to Watch This Weekend

It’s easy to get inundated with all the things going on in the world today. It’s also easy to lose yourself in a slew of old stuff you like to watch.

Why not try something new? A sport you’ve never really sat down to watch. A comedy special from someone you don’t really know. A movie you’ve never really heard about.

Here are the latest movies and shows you should be checking out this weekend.

Royal Portrush – The 153rd Open (Television/Peacock)

Golf may be a sport for older men who often fall asleep during it. However, it’s also a blast to see the best players in the world nail tough shots. This week the Royal Portrush in Ireland is hosting the 153rd Open where the highest ranking PGA (and some LIV) players are competing for more points towards the FedEx Championship. It’s a homecoming of sorts for Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy – the latter of who is finally playing at the caliber he should be. Wake up in the wee hours of the morning to see who comes out on top.

“Zarna Garg: Practical People Win” (Hulu)

Indian-American comedian Zarna Garg gets the recognition she’s owed with this Hulu special. Garg started in New York and worked her way up the circuit, garnering recognition from all points of the stand up industry. She has been lauded by Hilary and Chelsea Clinton, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Kevin Hart and more. She’s funny and charming and tells great jokes. Now, you can see all of that in a special fit for a queen.

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Season 3 (Paramount+)

“Star Trek” is back in prequel form! Watch the latest season of the show that is way too fun to be a traditional “Star Trek” show. Captain Pike, Spock, Number One and the crew gear up for more adventures aboard the USS Enterprise. Pike is marching towards his eventual, dreadful future with aplomb. Jump into the show that had a musical episode and a crossover with a cartoon.

“The Amateur” (Hulu)

Rami Malek works for the CIA and goes on a rampage, seeking revenge for those who killed his wife. It’s an action movie with a slower pace of a thriller featuring an actor who hasn’t done anything more than dramas. Malek works here because he’s the guy viewers wouldn’t normally put in this position. What’s better is he willingly gives every scene his all. This isn’t the type of movie an actor can go halfway on. Malek is believable and, frankly, fun.

“Eddington” (Theatrical)

Relive the COVID-19 pandemic in a movie that is just as long as we were trapped inside. This A24 film from Ari Aster is about a small town sheriff and mayor going head to head as the pandemic progresses. Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal (in his THIRD movie coming out this summer) lead a buzzy cast in a movie that will probably win award season.
