Happy Gilmore Returns, The Fantastic Four Goes to the 60’s: What’s New to Watch

As you wait for the latest dating show to drop, other shows along with new movies are going to take up your queue.

Why don’t you take down the list a few pegs?

Here’s what you should be watching this weekend.

Happy Gilmore 2 (Netflix)

29 years later, Adam Sandler returns to the world of one of his best movies. “Happy Gilmore 2” is a golfing movie for comedy fans who want the dream of the comedy movies from the 90’s. It’s packed to the brim with cameos and jokes. What a brim it is. Coming in at a chunky 118 minutes, Sandler, co-writer Tim Herlihy and director Kyle Newacheck want fans to be satiated in case there’s another 29 year gap.

Washington Black (Hulu)

From producer Sterling K. Brown comes a miniseries take on the book by Esi Edugyan. The story follows George Washington Black – an escaped slave who is taken under the wing of Brown’s Medwin Harris as the two overcome their traumatic pasts.

The Daily Show (TV/Paramount+/YouTube)

Comedian Josh Johnson has been a writer on “The Daily Show” for years. In the past two years, he became a correspondent – joining Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, and Desi Lydic. And, of course, Jon Stewart. Now, Johnson joins each of those names as a co-host. The viral comedian who is known to perform prescient stand up routines is now able to do that on one of the longest running late night shows. And his first week was a doozy.

Mad About You (Hulu)

If “Cheers,” “Seinfeld,” “Golden Girls,” “The Fresh Prince” and other sitcoms are known to be the best comedies in the world, “Mad About You” is the indie comedy that no one talks about. Paul Reiser, Helen Hunt, John Pankow and several other funny names hold down the fort in a show that doesn’t get enough recognition anymore. Newlyweds Paul and Jamie navigate their new life together in New York City while dealing with life, family, money, and eventually a baby daughter. “Mad About You” is a victim of the 90’s sitcom where drama can eek its way into the supposedly comedic plot. It works here, though, as the drama is built up over the course of the season preceding the birth of their child – leading to a frankly sad and depressing discussion between the two leads. Not many sitcoms can reach these depths without seeming cheesy. “Mad About You” needs to be seen by any comedy fan. Also, it’s a progenitor to “Friends” and features the first appearance of Phoebe Buffay’s sister Ursula.

The Fantastic 4: First Steps (Theaters)

The fifth (!) Fantastic Four movie since 1994, “First Steps” is the boldest take on a franchise that should’ve been as big as the X-Men movies. This one stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn as the superpowered family welcoming in a newborn as Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer and Ralph Ineson’s Galactus make their way towards Earth. The 1960’s aesthetic is the most imaginative backdrop in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Director Matt Shakman’s movie is the beginning of the end of the two decades long sprawling movie series that will (probably) culminate in Pascal’s Mr. Fantastic taking over the lead of the newly reformed Avengers as they take on Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
