90s Con: Highlights From the Popular ‘Scream’ Panel

The fourth annual 90s Con in Hartford, Connecticut, has come to an end. Stars like Joey Lawrence, Jennie Garth, AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys, Carnie Wilson from Wilson Phillips, Soleil Moon Frye, and many more were in attendance spilling tea and sharing memories about their beloved hits.

Here’s what I saw and heard from “Scream” cast members David Arquette, Jamie Kennedy, Matthew Lillard, Dermot Mulroney, and Skeet Ulrich.

David Arquette’s Favorite Moment from ‘Scream’ Involves Ex-Wife

Another question for the cast was, “What was your favorite moment to shoot?”

Arquette, famous for playing lovable cop Dewey in the franchise, declared that his favorite scene from the original 1996 film was with Courteney Cox, who he was married to from 1999 to 2013. During the last act of the movie, Dewey and Cox’s character Gale jump back from a speeding car of teens and roll onto the ground in each other’s arms.

Director Wes Craven “gave me the sweetest direction: ‘You’re going to look at her like you’ve been looking for her your whole life.'” Arquette gave a little laugh as he shared that tender memory.

According to In Touch, Cox was instrumental in having Arquette mysteriously return in the forthcoming “Scream 7.”

Lillard’s favorite scene to make was filming the intense final sequence of the film, the big climax, which took three weeks to shoot. “It was crazy to shoot,” he remembered. “A lot of energy.” Meanwhile, Mulroney, who played Detective Bailey in the sixth film, and currently stars in TV series “Chicago Fire,” declared with a laugh that his favorite to shoot was (spoiler alert!) his death scene. He mentioned that he was excited when he got the call to join “the most successful horror franchise of all time,” and quickly asked his agent if he was going to be working with Arquette, who he’s known since he was 16 years old. Sadly, no scenes together in that one!

When someone asked if the actors took anything from set, like a piece of wardrobe or prop, Arquette educated the crowd a bit. “You can’t take much really from set in case there are reshoots,” he stated. “They catalog everything, so you don’t want to mess up the continuity.” However, Ulrich took his character Billy’s boots, which made the crowd happy. Lillard didn’t take a physical thing, but he got the girl, at least for a little while! He admitted that he had originally auditioned for Billy, but of course didn’t get it. Ulrich followed up with, “You didn’t get that part, but you did get with Neve Campbell!” Lillard and scream queen Campbell dated briefly in 1997 while she was filming “Scream 2.”

Matthew Lillard & Skeet Ulrich Share Sincere Thoughts

The convention saved one of the most popular panels for the grand finale of the weekend: “Scream.” The franchise’s male stars walked on stage to big applause from a packed ballroom at the Connecticut Convention Center. Ulrich first gave a heartfelt speech to the fans before the panel kicked off, stating, “We always like to start these with a little ‘thank you’ to each and every one of you who has taken time out of your lives… to come here.” He continued, “It’s really beautiful to see… how loving you all are, how supportive of us obviously that you are, but really, we’re very grateful for who you are, and for the love you’ve shown to us, and we hope that in some way you’ve received it from us. We really try out hardest to share our gratitude for you during this weekend.”

Ulrich then jumped into the crowd and walked around giving high-fives to many, prompting Lillard to request, “Please do not grab his butt.” Lillard soon joined the crowd as well, handing the mics directly to fans for their questions, which is a rare sight at these events. No wonder fans love the two of them.

One audience member asked Lillard the big question about his involvement in the highly anticipated “Scream 7.Lillard turned serious and said, “I’m very excited and slightly terrified to be back… I hope I don’t F it up for everyone.” The crowd of course applauded with encouragement. He also got honest about his life, stating that he was an obese teenager with a learning disability before he made it, and added, “The duration that we’ve had in this business is a luxury. The hardest part is to keep going.”

When a fan asked Lillard to do the “Give It To Me Baby” dance he did in 1999’s “She’s All That,” it seemed for a split second that he would go for it. He then quickly declined, shouting, “I’m almost 60 years old! No, I will not do that! Security!”

What’s Their Favorite Scary Movie?

As the panel was coming to a close, a fan asked the classic question from the franchise, “What’s your favorite scary movie?” Ulrich went first with recent horror film “When Evil Lurks” from Argentina, praising the shocking visuals. Mulroney shouted out “The Stepfather” from 1987, praising star Terry O’Quinn, and also plugged his other horror franchise sequel “Insidious: Chapter 3.” Arquette went the classic route, sharing his love for Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 hit “The Shining.”

Kennedy, who played fan favorite Randy Meeks in the first three “Scream” films, gave an answer much like his character would. He couldn’t pick just one: “The Exorcist,” “Halloween,” “Friday the 13th,” and “Scream.” His co-stars were shocked he forgot an iconic line his character says in “Scream 2,” which prompted him to remember: “Oh! And ‘Showgirls!'” Lillard wrapped the question up nicely, stating that “Scream” is his favorite scary movie, adding, “It changed my life as my college experience.”

In his final words, Lillard gave a rousing closing speech about how fans can truly support them and other performers. “Follow artists and creators on social media, since that really makes an impact and it’s where decisions are made.”
