‘Southern Charm’ Star Says Season 10 Scene Was Not As It Seemed

“Southern Charm” alum  Jarrett “JT” Thomas said a controversial scene shown during the season 10 premiere wasn’t exactly how it played out on TV.

In a post shared on Instagram in December 2024, Thomas explained the moment when he gave walking canes to the other cast members, including 83-year-old matriarch Patricia Altschul.

“The canes weren’t my idea,” Thomas shared with his followers. “Another cast member went into the gas station and got canes for those on the bus but I wanted to make sure there couldn’t be drama by not having canes for the rest of the squad already at the Carolina Cup. So I hobbled my [expletive] back into the gas station and made sure everyone would have a cane just in case.”

Thomas did not name the cast member who originally bought the canes.

In the premiere episode, Thomas had been walking with a cane due to a serious ATV accident. During a road trip to the Carolina Cup, he emerged from a rest stop area with a handful of walking sticks for his co-stars. The gift was not well-received by the group.

In his Instagram post, Thomas wrote, “Watching episode 1 was not easy. Thankful to be alive and I know it’s all in good fun but e1 was hard for me to watch.”

JT Thomas Offended Patricia Altschul With His Gift

On the season 10 premiere titled “Raising Cane,” Thomas was shown gifting canes to Austen Kroll and Craig Conover. “It’s [expletive] weird,” Kroll said in a confessional.

Thomas then spotted “Miss Pat” and offered her the same gift. “I don’t need a cane,” Altschul said as she made a face.

The grande dame also complained in a confessional, “I am genuinely offended,” Altschul told producers. “What’s next, a wheelchair? I don’t know what the hell he was thinking. Kind of a stupid gift, in my estimation.”

Thomas later noticed that Altschul refused to use the cane he gifted her. “She turned my cane down. That’s savage,” he said.

At the end of the episode, a teaser for later in the season showed Conover claiming that Thomas called Altschul a derogatory name behind her back after she rejected his gift.

Some Fans Didn’t Understand Patricia’s Reaction

“Southern Charm” stars—and fans—had mixed reactions to Thomas’ odd gift to Altschul.

In a confessional Venita Aspen noted that such a gift should never be given to “a woman of a certain age.” Madison LeCroy also questioned what Thomas was thinking.

Fans on social media agreed that the gift was in poor taste. But other fans felt Altschul’s reaction was rude.

“I didn’t understand Patricia’s reaction. She seemed to want something to be mad at you about. So much for graciously accepting a gift, even when it’s a silly one,” one Instagram follower wrote to Thomas.

“I thought your gesture of giving canes including to Patricia was nice 🥰,” another follower wrote.

Things clearly don’t get better for Thomas as the “Southern Charm” season goes on. A few weeks before the 10th season of the Bravo reality show premiered, he shared an Instagram post to announce his exit from the show. “I no longer wish to participate in any ways moving forward with the TV show,” he wrote. “I will leave it at that for now while I work on next steps to recover both physically and mentally from what has been an extremely challenging & exhausting year.”
