Andy Cohen Issues Apology to Reality TV Couple 14 Years After On-Air Insult: ‘Really Sorry About That’

Andy Cohen has issued an apology to Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt years after he insulted Montag on his Bravo late-night show “Watch What Happens Live.”

On January 29, 2025, Cohen spoke out on his Sirius XM show “Andy Cohen Live” to recall the unkind words he once said about the former “The Hills” star.

“I had said something on ‘Watch What Happens Live’ years ago,” Cohen said of the 2011 incident. “What I will say also is that was mean. That was 14 years ago, and what I really don’t like about it is referring to her as trash … I don’t like that at all, and I’m really sorry about that, so I apologize again.”

“By the way, there were things that we said and did on TV 14 years ago that we wouldn’t do now,” Cohen added. “It just was a different universe, but that’s not — I’m not trying to justify it.”

Cohen’s co-host John Hill praised him for the “very heartfelt” apology and for taking ownership of the situation.

According to BravoTV.com, in 2011 Montag posted on Twitter to say she wanted to join “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” but Cohen issued a brutal response, naming her his “Jackhole of the Week” on “Watch What Happens Live.” “That trash is delusional and I would sooner stab my knives into my own eyes than see her on this network,” the Bravo host said of Montag.

The outlet noted that Cohen later explained to People magazine that there had been “so many rumors going on about the Housewives that he was “at the tipping point, basically.” “I guess I got a little carried away,” he admitted of comments about Montag.

Spencer Pratt Denounced Andy Cohen

In January 2025,  Montag and Pratt lost their Pacific Palisades home and all of their belongings to the California wildfires in Los Angeles County. The former MTV couple received an onslaught of fan support. Montag’s 2010 album “Superficial” even hit  No. 1 on the iTunes U.S. album chart amid Pratt’s plea for fans to download her music, according to Parade.

But when fans suggested Montag should be cast on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” or “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” Pratt  responded on X with, “No thanks.”

Another fan asked Pratt if he and his wife would accept an invitation to go on “Watch What Happens Live.” “The person who said he would rather scratch his eyes out then [sic] watch my wife … hard pass,” the Pratt Daddy founder replied.

“lol yah so lucky the guy that bashes my wife gonna be so lucky to sit with him. Rather sit in my burned house rubble,” Pratt also wrote on X.

Andy Cohen Explained His Comment About Heidi Montag

Montag previously questioned Cohen’s judgment about not casting her on one of his “Real Housewives” shows. “He made a statement a while ago that he would never want me on it and that I wasn’t for their franchise, but I think that he’s so wrong,” she told The Hollywood Reporter in a 2023 interview. “I would think that he would appreciate the reality star that I am. I completely make sense to be on one of these shows.”

“Maybe before when I was younger that didn’t quite make sense. But I’m 37 now, and as a mama too, I could easily go on Orange County or Beverly Hills,” the MTV alum continued.

That same year, Cohen spoke on “Andy Cohen Live” and admitted he didn’t have “much institutional knowledge” of Montag and her husband because he never watched their MTV reality show. “I feel like in the news it comes up all the time where you’re like, ‘Oh yeah, Spencer said you hate him,” Cohen said.

He explained why he’s not interested in casting people well-known from reality TV franchises on The Housewives. “I have said that I thought it would be weird if they were on ‘The Housewives’ because the same reason that I was saying that it would be weird if [‘Jersey Shore’ star] Snooki came on ‘The Housewives,’” he explained. “They’re so identified, not only with another show, but with another network.”
