Scotty McCreery has seen a lot of highs in his life after “American Idol,” but he’s experienced plenty of lows, too. In early July 2025, the singer shared that he lost both of his grandmothers on the same day, a truly heart wrenching tragedy. On July 14th, just a few days after the announcement, McCreery posted a heartfelt tribute to his grandmothers that had fans flocking to support him.
The post, which he captioned, “In memory of my grandmothers,” features McCreery performing his hit song, “Five More Minutes.” The “Idol” alum played the song for a Nashville crowd at this year’s CMA Fest, but the song has even more significance now in the wake of his grandmothers’ deaths. The song shares a powerful message about the passage of time and how precious it is.
Fans in the tribute post’s comments section shared an outpouring of support for McCreery. “I’m so sorry for your loss, I know how special grandmas are,” one fan wrote. “They will forever be proud of you.” Others shared how fitting the tribute was, while some fans showed their love with heart emojis.
McCreery Originally Wrote The Song in Honor of Another Family Member

As The Boot reported, McCreery originally wrote “Five More Minutes” with another family member in mind. The song came to be soon after his grandfather died in 2015. “I was just kind of talking to him about Grandaddy, and [how] there were a few things I wanted to tell Grandaddy that I didn’t get a chance to,” McCreery explained, referencing a conversation with producer Frank Rogers.
As the singer also shared, “Five More Minutes” accomplishes exactly what he believes country music does so well. “To me, country music is real people singing about real-life things. To me, that’s what “Five More Minutes” is: It’s a song about real-life things.” After McCreery and his songwriting partners, Rogers and Month Criswell, finished the song, the “Idol” alum knew they had stumbled on something special. “I tweeted out, when I left Frank’s house, that I just wrote my favorite song that I’ve ever written,” he said.
The Song’s Opry Debut Was a Stunning Success

The power of the song truly hit home for McCreery once he brought it to live audiences. In particular, the song’s 2016 Opry debut showed him just how deeply “Five More Minutes” resonated with his fans. As the singer shared, he received a standing ovation for the song at the Opry. Requests for the song became a common occurrence, and he knew he had a hit on his hands. Now, with this new dedication to his departed grandmothers, McCreery has given new life to the decade-old song and its timeless message.
