Country superstar Luke Bryan might want to stick with his day job. On April 8, 2025, the “American Idol” judge tried to work a shift at a Raising Cane’s restaurant in Nashville and quickly realized it’s not as easy as it looks.
Luckily, Bryan had the company’s founder and owner, Todd Graves, constantly by his side, attempting to keep the singer on task at the drive-thru and correct any behind-the-counter mistakes — like an overflowing soda cup Bryan hilariously tried to fill for a customer.
But in the end, Bryan’s shenanigans were all for a good cause. His Raising Cane’s shift was done to mark the beginning of a $1 million commitment the chicken restaurant chain has made to The Brett Boyer Foundation — a charity Bryan and his wife, Caroline Bryan, co-founded in honor of their late niece, Sadie Brett Boyer.
Luke Bryan Wants to Make Sure ‘No Kid Ever Receives a Diagnosis’ Like His Niece Did
Bryan clearly had a blast serving customers at Raising Cane’s, but he also took time to talk about the serious reason he was there. Each year for the next four years, the restaurant chain will provide $250,000 to the foundation he co-founded in 2017 with his wife, Caroline, and her brother and sister-in-law Ellen and Bo, in memory of their first child, whom they called Brett.
Baby Brett was diagnosed prenatally with Down Syndrome and a congenital heart defect (CHD), according to the foundation’s website. After her birth, she underwent open heart surgery and bravely survived for seven months, including a 100-day hospital stay.
“CHD doesn’t get talked about enough and the fact that Brett’s name lives on and is doing so much good for kids who need it helps us make sure no kid ever receives a diagnosis like Brett’s again,” Bryan said in a statement. “We know 36 kids who are alive today because of The Brett Boyer Foundation and we want to see that number grow to thousands in the future.”
Graves, who has donated over $140 million to charities in communities where Raising Cane’s are located, commented during a press conference that he’s inspired seeing Bryan’s family “taking something so tragic and turning it into something so beautiful.”
Luke Bryan’s Family Hopes to Raise Awareness of CHD & What Patients’ Families Go Through
After the event at Raising Cane’s, Bryan’s sister-in-law Ellen, who serves as the foundation’s president, hopped on social media to share her excitement about the restaurant chain’s commitment to her baby girl and other families facing similar diagnoses.
For the next two weeks, she wrote, Raising Cane’s will have a nationwide awareness campaign with information about the Brett Boyer Foundation in every restaurant, “spreading the word about CHD and uplifting the Down syndrome communities,” Ellen wrote.
That’s important, Bryan said at the press conference, because many people don’t know about CHD or how the money they raise helps families.
“So many times when people donate to a charity they never know where the money goes, but this money goes directly to the families and kids with CHD,” he said. “Not only is CHD not talked about enough, but people rarely realize the strain it puts on parents and siblings and we want to help however we can.”
“Family is at the heart of this and so many are in hospitals not knowing the future of their kids’ lives,” Bryan continued. “It’s an enormous undertaking for these families and knowing that The Brett Boyer Foundation can come in and help families worldwide is amazing. We started small and are growing!”
