It’s no surprise that American Idol judges have hunches about certain contestants — after all, they’re seasoned entertainment professionals themselves. Still, it can be challenging to make any accurate predictions with a field as competitive as this year’s contestant pool. Nevertheless, Luke Bryan recently told People that he has a strong sense of who could take home the win.
“My gut has told me Jamal has… [been] a lead all year,” the “One Margarita” singer shared in a group interview with the other “Idol” judges, referring to Mississippi native Jamal Roberts. The lifelong singer has picked an ideal time to peak, gradually gaining momentum as the season has unfolded. But can he translate that into a win? Bryan says it’s possible with the right strategy and voter support.
Bryan Says It’s All About Staying Focused in This Tight Race

Despite his belief that Roberts is a front-runner, Bryan did acknowledge that his competitors also have a very strong chance of winning this year. He praised Breanna Nix for her consistency, and remarked that John Foster is on an upward trajectory. To come out on top of such a talented group, Bryan said the key is to stay focused.
“Even if it’s something that Jamal’s kind of had the reins of, it could change with a little bit of not focus[ing] … so they gotta be focused all the way to the end,” the singer explained. He also shared that keeping their eyes on the prize is something any contestant will have to keep doing if they want to excel in the entertainment industry.
Will Voters Make the Singer’s Prediction a Reality?

During the group interview, fellow judges Lionel Richie and Carrie Underwood shared similar sentiments about how the competition prepares contestants for their longer-term careers in music. “We always call this star boot camp because you learn a lot really fast,” Underwood shared after reflecting on how this season compares to her own experience on “Idol.”
Richie also explained that popularity is at the heart of who will win this season, especially with the remaining contestants being so equally talented in their own ways. This highlights just how unpredictable “Idol” results can be. Although Bryan has plenty of good reasons to think Roberts could ultimately go the distance, there’s no telling how America will vote in the upcoming finale.
