Kelly Clarkson Reveals Song Inspired by Brandon Blackstock

Kelly Clarkson had a famously tumultuous relationship and difficult divorce from her now late ex-husband Brandon Blackstock.

But before things got tough, the “American Idol” was so happy in her relationship with Blackstock that it inspired a hit song.

In a 2012 interview with ABC News Radio, Kelly revealed that her blossoming romance with Blackstock was her inspiration to record “Don’t Rush.”

The hit song featured Vince Gill on backing vocals. In fact, the pair performed it on stage at the 2012 CMA Awards.

“I’m in a relationship and super happy,” Kelly told ABC News Radio, “and I don’t think I would have been able to sing this song eight months ago.”

Kelly gushed, “Love should be celebrated, and this is a great description of where I’m at in my life. This is a couple’s skate, not an all-skate song.”

Don’t Rush” turned out to be a hit for Kelly on the country charts, and even earned her a Grammy nod for Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the 56th Grammy Awards.

The lyrics talk about making your own rules, with the chorus reading,

“Stopping every minute just because you’re in it
Wishing everyday was Sunday, you’re right next to me
It’s how it’s supposed to be
Hanging on every touch
Baby don’t rush, no no
Baby don’t rush”

Kelly Clarkson’s Relationship With Brandon Blackstock Was a Slow Burn

Kelly Clarkson first met Brandon Blackstock in 2006 at a rehearsal for the Academy of Country Music Awards.

At the time, Blackstock was married to Melissa Ashworth.

Nevertheless, Kelly knew they had a future together.

She told People in 2013, “I’ve only had three other boyfriends that I dated, and not really seriously. This guy walks by, making everybody laugh. I said, ‘I’m gonna end up with him. I know it.’ “

Brandon and Kelly reconnected at the Super Bowl in 2012, when Brandon was going through a divorce.

But the relationship got off to an inauspicious start.

Kelly told People that the pair’s first date was on the day one of her musical idols unexpectedly passed away.

“This is the funniest, worst thing ever. One of my superhero idols is Whitney Houston, and the day she died was our first date,” Kelly said of she and Brandon’s first date on February 11, 2012.

Interestingly, Kelly said, “I was like, ‘This is a bad omen.’”
