How Kelly Clarkson Stood by Ex-Husband Brandon Blackstock’s Side During His Final Days

Kelly Clarkson stepped away from the spotlight earlier this year to be there for her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, as he privately battled cancer. Multiple sources told Page Six that the “American Idol” alum quietly paused her schedule in February & March, leaving guest hosts to fill in on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

While fans were left wondering about her sudden absence, behind the scenes, Clarkson was caring for Blackstock, the father of her two children, River, 10, and Remington, 8. Their divorce was finalized in 2022, but Clarkson remained closely involved as he faced serious health complications.

Clarkson Revealed His Illness Just Before His Death

Blackstock’s family confirmed his death on Thursday at age 48, following a private, years-long battle with cancer. Just one day earlier, on August 6, Clarkson announced she was canceling the remainder of her Las Vegas “Studio Sessions” residency to focus on family.

“While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them,” Clarkson wrote in a heartfelt statement. Fans quickly applauded her strength & vulnerability, many unaware of the struggle that had been unfolding off-screen.

Sources close to the star told Page Six that Clarkson made the deliberate choice to stay by Blackstock’s side for the sake of their two kids. Though their split had been widely publicized, her focus remained on keeping River & Remington emotionally supported as their father’s condition worsened.

The “Breakaway” singer, 43, has primary custody of the children and has long emphasized her role as a hands-on mom. Her decision to step away from high-profile commitments was deeply personal, guided by a desire to protect and comfort her kids during a tough time.

His ties to music royalty ran deep, not only through his marriage to Kelly Clarkson and his connection to Reba McEntire, but also through his father Narvel Blackstock’s longtime role as McEntire’s manager and partner.
