One week after celebrity hairstylist Jesus Guerrero died unexpectedly at age 34, pop star Katy Perry has broken her silence on the loss of her friend. In a social media post shared on March 1, 2025, Perry included 17 photos and videos taken with Guerrero, including behind-the-scenes footage on the “American Idol” set as Guerrero helped the former judge get ready to film.
Perry started her post by addressing Guerrero as “Hey Hey aka Chuy aka Jesus, our light filled beautiful boy ❤️”
“You always made every room so warm and welcome,” she continued. “There was no problem too big to solve and one of your many talents was effortlessly reminding women around the world of our Goddess nature with even just a simple blowout. You took care of everyone and brought a positive energy to everything.”
Perry is the latest celebrity to publicly pay tribute to Guerrero, who died on February 22 “very suddenly and unexpectedly,” according to a message his sister Gris Guerrero wrote on a GoFundMe she started to help cover expenses associated with getting his body home to Houston. Fans and famous friends donated $96,000, while celebrity friend and client Kylie Jenner offered to cover all funeral expenses.
Jesus Guerrero Worked With Katy Perry on ‘American Idol’ Set & King’s Coronation
Among the photos and videos Perry shared in her tribute post, Guerrero could be seen helping the pop star get ready for King Charles’ coronation ceremony in 2023 and prepping for her “Idol” auditions in 2024, including the night they scared fans into thinking they’d cut her hair into a short bob (it was just a wig).
“It was easy to love you because you always felt like an old friend who would tell you the truth and hold you if you needed an extra cuddle,” Perry wrote in her tribute.
“I know you are ok because you are now in the light that you shined so brightly back here on earth,” she continued. “It’s just us that are left with a dimmer world without you.”
“I found a quote that sums up the feelings I’ve had this past week that you’ve been gone,” Perry wrote, and then shared the following prose: “Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.”
Former ‘Idol’ Judge Jennifer Lopez is Also Coping With Jesus Guerrero’s Passing
Perry isn’t the only former “Idol” judge to have had a close relationship with Guerrero. He was with Jennifer Lopez in Abu Dhabi days before his passing, according to Page Six, and on February 25, she posted a heartfelt tribute to him.
“It’s no surprise your mother gave you the name Jesus,” Lopez began her tribute. “You were gentle and kind and loving, quiet and unassuming, but so powerful, and your presence was felt the minute you walked into any room. You never demanded the spotlight. You never needed to make a sound to be recognized, your heart and your talent did that as effortlessly as you artistry did.”
Lopez posted a black-and-white photo of Guerrero with her online tribute, in which she told her followers, “I’ve been having trouble putting the words together the last few days. The truth is I’m still in shock that such a beautiful young life has come to an end. It seems senseless and unfair.”
“I know your family is brokenhearted as am I and everyone else who knew you,” Lopez continued in her tribute. “Your spirit moved on to the next phase beyond this life but I know wherever you are there is beauty and light. And the beauty and light you left here will live on forever. Rest in peace, sweet angel… 💔”
It remains unclear how Guerrero died. His sister told Us Weekly on February 25, “We have been able to track every one of his steps, but we don’t know what got him sick or what was (the) sickness. It all happened suddenly and no one knows why.”
