Jessica Simpson got candid about her “American Idol” performance. The singer, 44, returned to television on Sunday, May 18, for the first time in 15 years.
Simpson was one of the guest performers during the grand finale of the show’s Season 23. For her TV comeback, Simpson sang her brand new single, “Blame Me.”
She was also joined by contestant Josh King for a duet of her iconic 2005 rendition of “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’.”
Jessica Simpson Reflects On Her ‘American Idol’ Moment
Despite being away from television performances for over a decade, Simpson slayed the “American Idol” stage like a pro. The singer even got a standing ovation from the show’s judges, Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie.
While Simpson made it look effortless, that wasn’t the case at all. In an interview with Extra, the “Take My Breath Away” singer admitted she was actually very nervous during the performance.
Oh, my God, I was dying. I can’t even tell you how long it’s been since I’ve been that nervous. Like, I had to put hairspray on my feet to stand still, like, not that it actually keeps me put, but, like, my feet were sweating. I’m like, my feet don’t sweat.
Simpson also revealed that she was quite emotional and almost cried on stage.
I just kept telling myself, ‘Do not cry. Do not cry. I know this is a big moment… do not cry.’ And then I see my dad, like, up in the corner and I’m like, ‘Ah, I’m going to cry. I’m going to cry. Do not cry. Just sing your songs. Just sing your songs.
The singer recalled the last time she performed on TV, noting that it was very different from her “American Idol” performance.
That’s a really long time, and, like, the last time was a Christmas song, so that’s easy. So, this is my new EP ‘Nashville Canyon’ part one, I mean, part two comes in the summer, but it is so much a part of my soul, and so to sing a song off of that I felt naked, to be honest, like, it was very bare and raw and very vulnerable.
Simpson Unfazed By The Negative Comments
While Simpson’s TV comeback was a success, not everyone’s impressed with her overall performance. The singer has been getting mean comments on social media, with some making fun of her singing.
But the “Irresistible” singer doesn’t seem fazed by them at all. If anything, Simpson has been keeping busy with her other projects, including an appearance on an episode of Ryan Murphy’s new legal drama, “All’s Fair.”
Simpson gushed:
I did an episode of ‘All’s Fair,’ and what a show! I mean, great cast. It is so fun. I didn’t want it to end, like, I was so grateful that Ryan Murphy thought of me.
“All’s Fair” stars Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts, Glenn Close, Sarah Paulson, Niecy Nash-Betts, and Teyana Taylor.
