Did Jamal Roberts Make the Top 8 of ‘American Idol’ 2025?

Jamal Roberts, the Mississippi physical education teacher who made it into the top 10 of “American Idol” season 23, vied for viewers’ votes again on May 4, 2025. Contestants performed songs made famous by “iconic women in music,” the theme of the episode that aired live from coast-to-coast. Viewers had less than two hours to vote for their favorites during the show, determining who would make it through to the top 8 of season 23.

After voting closed during the final commercial break, host Ryan Seacrest was ready to reveal which members of season 23’s top 10 would advance to the top 8. So did Roberts make it through? YES, Roberts did make it through to the top 8! And here’s a breakdown of tonight’s full results.

Jamal Roberts Has Always Loved Music & Previously Appeared on BET’s ‘Sunday’s Best’

Roberts has opened up during his journey on “American Idol” about his determination to help create a better life for his elementary school students in his hometown of Meridian and his little girls, Lyrik and Harmoni, who flew to be in the studio audience for the May 4 episode.

In March, he told local TV station WTOK that he’s been singing since he was two-years-old, encouraged to do so by his grandparents.

“My grandparents always told me that I had a great voice,” he said. “They would always try to get me to sing different things, and they were like ‘Yeah, you got it.’ I first started singing The Temptations and they were like ‘Yeah, this is it. You can sing.’ And I’ve been singing ever since.”

Roberts admitted to WTOK he was nervous about getting his hopes up on “American Idol,” given his past experience on another TV show. In 2021, he reached the top three on BET’s “Sunday Best,” but not winning was hard to take.

“‘Sunday Best’ has prepared me because it gave me thick skin,” he said. “It broke my heart a little bit, you know?… Because I was expecting to be great, to do something great, and then I was told that I’m not.”

The top 8 of season 23 will move on to compete again on May 5, competing to make it into the top 7.
