Does ‘American Idol’ Need a Change? Fans Have Thoughts

It seems like some fans think “American Idol” might be due for a little glow-up. Yep, the talent’s still there, the music still slaps, and the nostalgia factor? Strong as ever. But viewers have been chiming in lately with one collective vibe: something feels off. From judge dynamics to the pacing of the show, long-time viewers are ready for a remix.

When people start throwing around “make American Idol great again,” it’s probably time to listen.

The Judges

Fans are not holding back when it comes to the current panel. Katy Perry’s exit opened the floodgates, and now some folks are calling for a full overhaul.

One user on X posted, “Not all that sad about Katy leaving. Go ahead and kick off Luke and Lionel too so we can get some judges that will actually critique contestants during the live shows.” A second person agreed, sharing, “I wouldn’t mind if we got a whole new panel next season.” Oof.

Another fan went full nostalgia mode, tweeting:

“Bring back someone truthful and mean like Simon Cowell was. Make American Idol great again!”

Honestly, say what you want about Simon, but he did keep it real; and maybe that edge is exactly what’s missing now.

It’s not that people want cruelty, but if every critique sounds like a pep talk, what’s the point? Constructive feedback doesn’t need to be mean, but it does need to be useful. Fans aren’t asking for a roast session… they just want the judges to, you know, judge.

Too Much Fluff

Another thing folks are over? The constant sob stories. Yes, emotional moments can be powerful, but when every audition leans into trauma more than talent, it gets old real fast.

One Reddit user said it straight: “Spending 10+ minutes on a sob story after sob story and admitting people based on how much trauma they’ve sustained is irritating.”

The post led to tons of messages of agreement, such as this comment

“Everyone has problems. Everyone has had traumatic experiences. Negative things are all we hear about anymore. Maybe it’s time we start talking about positive things instead of all this unnecessary drama.”

And don’t even get fans started on the lightning-speed eliminations. A Redditor summed it up with this thought: “I loved this season initially but since we hit the top 20 I feel like they’ve just been getting rid of talent in droves and it hasn’t been as enjoyable for me.”

Truthfully, when you barely have time to learn someone’s name before they’re sent packing, it’s hard to stay invested.

How Does ABC Fix It?

Despite all the critiques, there’s a lot of love for “American Idol.” Fans want it to thrive. So, we’re not saying throw the whole show out, but maybe dust off the piano, re-tune the mic, and give it the refresh it deserves.

What’s wild is, the issues aren’t even that deep; it’s not broken, it’s just… tired. Like, someone hit snooze a few seasons ago and never quite woke the show back up. Fans aren’t asking for a full-on overhaul; they just want “American Idol” to stop coasting on legacy and actually bring the spark again. Give us moments that feel like moments. Right now, it’s all starting to blur.

The talent’s there, the foundation is solid; it’s just time to tweak the formula. Tighten the pacing, shake up the panel (i.e. a rotating celeb judge could be interesting), and bring back some honest-to-goodness tension.
